Division Training School

The need to create a training unit to serve the personnel of the 8th Infantry Division, PA, the 8th Division training unit was activated on 01 November 1988 pursuant to General Orders Numbers 497 Headquarters, Philippine Army, Fort Andres Bonifacio, Metro Manila dated 02 November 1988. With personnel and equipment shall be within the troop ceiling and equipment authorized by the infantry division. The 8th Division Training Unit LOGO symbols with each meaning:

            TRIANGLE – Represent 8DTU’s adherent to the Army’s Triad Concept of Intelligence, Combat Operation and Civil Military Operation to counter against insurgency.

            WHITE BORDER – Portrays 8DTU’s purity and sincerity in its commitment to attain the training goals and objectives set forth by mother unit, 8th infantry Division, Philippine Army.

            GREEN COLOR – Represent the solemn goal of 8DTU to help attain and ensure regional peace and development as its contribution to the national goals of the government.

            FLAME AND SWORD – Represents the maxim “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER” 8DTU’s continuing quest for knowledge and its burning desire to transform this into motion for the benefit of the people depicted  and described by the red flame. The sword is the power of energy resulting from such transformation ready to be unleashed against all forces that tends to destroy our democratic institution and our cherished freedom.

            SWORD’S HANDLE – The eight (8) ribs shown on the handle of the sword represent the numerical designation of 8DTU, 8ID, PA.

GOLD COLOR – Reflects 8DTU richness and abundance of ideas, concepts that characterizes its strength and magnanimity as an institution.

            STARS – Represent the six (6) provinces of region VIII, the Northern Samar, Western Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Biliran Province.


MISSION 

To conduct in-service trainings and specialization courses in order to enhance the skills and competencies of 8 ID personnel in support to the over-all mission of 8ID.

A dynamic and relevant training unit that is responsive and coherent with the demands of the oprational environment in support to the mission and objectives of 8ID.

U N I T   H I S T O R Y


            To update and establish the quality/standard of the military personnel in the active service, the training and education branch under G8, Philippine Army has created a division training unit in every Infantry Divisions Army-wide to serve the personnel of the different tactical and post units. The functions and objectives of the education and training branch is to formulate education and training policies, plans and programs to enhance the career development of the individual soldiers.

            This was organized from a handful of officers and enlisted personnel from headquarters and Headquarters service battalion 8ID, PA station at Camp Lukban, Catabalogan, Samar. The training unit is the working arm of G8, 8ID, PA in the conduct of training to organic personnel of the division. The personnel and equipment were just enough to make the training start as directed by the commanding General 8ID, PA.

            The original personnel of the unit was compose of four (4) officers under LTC ROLANDO S PESTÑO (GSC) PA as the commanding Officer, MAJOR ARTEMEO T DEVARAS JR (INF) PA as the executive Officer, CPT ANTONIO RABI (INF) PA and 1LT RENE CHRISANTO DE GUZMAN (OS) PA as the staff Officers. There were eleven (11) Enlisted Personnel that compose the training force of the unit, the trainors are: TSG Benjamin Remandaban (Inf) PA, SSg Mamerto M Eligio (Inf PA, Sgt Saturnino A Napeñas (Inf) PA,  Cpl Ronnie Mil (Inf) PA, Cpl Andres Buenafe (Inf) PA, and Cpl Benjamin C Obera (Inf) PA. These personnel have their own field of specialization and can effectively instruct and can impart knowledge to the students.

            The unit conducted training at Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar when the Division was just activated and occupied the camp which lack facilities to accommodate the students. After four (4) months stay at the Division Headquarters, the unit transferred to Brgy Santol, San Miguel Leyte on March 1989 and continue its assigned task. After occupying four (4) Months at Brgy Santol, the unit was brought back to Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar on July 1989, under the new commander LTC DAVID T TACORDA (INF) PA with another Officer assigned, CPT ROMEO D ARGENIO (OS) PA and the Enlisted Personnel was increased from eleven (11) to eighteen (18) as additional personnel. They are MSg Reynaldo Tupas (Inf) PA, TSg Rolando Javier (Inf) PA, SSg Isidro Falsis (SC) PA, Sgt Alex S Soriano (Inf) PA, Sgt Roman Quibido (Inf) PA, Sgt Jorge Dagondon (Inf) PA and Cpl Brigido Mindajao (Inf) PA.

            LTC DAVID T TACORDA (INF) PA was succeeded by LTC NESTOR C CASTILLO (OS) PA as the Commanding Officer of the unit but did not stay long. On March 1990, CPT EUTIQUIO M CABANDO JR (INF) PA take over the command. After six (6) months of conducting training at camp Lukban, the unit was again transferred back to Brgy Santol, San Miguel Leyte on 04 October 1990 to resume the training thereat.

            On January 1991 MAJOR RUDY M GANTUANGKO (INF) PA assumed command from CPT CABANDO who was then reassigned to Hqs 8ID, PA. It did not take long MAJOR GANTUANGKO (INF) PA was promoted to the grade of LTC. On 05 December 1991, LTC GANTUNGKO (INF) PA was relieved as Commanding Officer of the unit.

            MAJOR VICTORIO O SUPERALES (INF) PA was designated as Acting Commanding Officer, however, on 22 December 1991, LTC TEODORO V ILAGAN (GSC) PA was designated as OIC in addition to his other duties as AC of S, G8, 8ID, PA for almost three (3) months. On 16 March 1992, he was relieved as AC of S G8, 8ID, PA and designated as Commanding Officer of same unit with MAJOR PEDRO D UGSIMAR (MAC) PA as the Executive Officer. When CPT WILLIAM C ILAGAN (CAV) PA was assigned with this unit on 16 January 1992 he was promoted to next higher grade, MAJOR UGSIMAR (MAC) PA was relieved and assigned as Officer-In-Charge of the medical Detachment being a MAC Officer.

            MAJOR ILAGAN (CAV) PA was designated as Executive Officer on 01 May 1992. CPT BENJAMIN C MEDIODIA (CAV) PA was designated as Personnel Officer/Adjutant, MAJOR ILAGAN (CAV) PA was the Intelligence Officer in concurrent capacity, CPT ROMEO BORDALIO (INF) PA the Operation Officer with concurrent position as RSO and AMO, CPT ROLANDO C CASIMINA (INF) PA the CMO Officer and later was relieved and reassigned at 8CMOC, CPT SALVADOR M SEBASTIAN (INF) PA the Headquarters Commandant who went on schooling at TCPA on 01 August 1992. CPT ERNESTO D ABORES (QMS) PA the unit Research and Training Aid Officer.

            The unit was composed of a work force of forty three (43) Enlisted Personnel led by William C Tingal (Inf) PA as Sgt Major and MSg Felix C Nesus (MS) PA as the unit F/Sgt. Most of the personnel assigned to the unit are graduates of career courses and specialization course on their military occupational specialty to include Instructors Development Course to enhance the teaching capability of the unit.

            On 12 July 1992, the unit were move from Brgy Santol, San Miguel, Leyte to Camp Captain Eugenia Daza, Fatima, Hinabangan, Samara.

            To widen the services of the unit, on training education, the unit was directed by higher headquarters to open the career courses to cope-up the requirement of personnel as a prerequisites to be qualified for promotion. Basic-Non Commissioned Officer Course Class 71-92 and Advance Non-Commissioned Officer Course Class 50-95 was conducted by this unit at Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar. The building of LOGCOM was the temporary quarters of the students and the training directorate, classroom was at the training center of Samar Regional School of Fisheries, wherein the students were shuttle by M35 truck from the camp to school of fisheries.

            On 01 June 1993, MAJOR VIRGILIO C PALENCIA (INF) PA assumed command from LTC ILAGAN (GSC) PA who was relieved and assigned back to Hqs 8ID, PA as AC of S, G1. Since MAJOR PALENCIA (INF) PA assumed command, the unit was able to conduct five (5) career courses both  Advance and Basic NCO COurse with two hundred thirty four (234)  students graduated. During his period; the unit constructed fifty (50) pcs study tables, fifty pcs folding chairs, fifty (50) pcs wooden double deck for the students, repair of motor pool, Mess Hall and the construction of Jungle Base which was not completed as part of the gradual improvement of the unit facilities.

            On 05 August 1994, MAJOR PALENCIA (INF) PA was reassigned to 20IB, 8ID, PA as Battalion Commander. MAJOR PEDRO P BIASBAS (FA) PA Commanding Officer of 8th Field Artillery Battalion, assumed command in addition of his duty, as Commanding Officer of the unit. Since MAJOR BIASBAS (FA) PA assumed command, the unit was able to conduct four (4) career courses both Advance and Basic NCO Courses with one hundred four (104) students, one (1) CAFGU training with eighty eight (88) CAA students and one (1) instructor Development Seminar (IDS) with fourteen (14) organic personnel this unit had graduated. During his time, the unit received one (1) Public Address System, , one (1) Kubuta Electric Generator and other resources such as the repair of Mess Hall, Overhaul of Combatant Jeep, Kennedy Jeep and Isuzu Elf Truck, the construction of two (2) Salakot Shed and other facilities which they have been repaired and procured as part of the improvement of this unit.

            On 05 February 1995, MAJOR PEDRO P BIASBAS (FA) PA was terminated as Commanding Officer of this unit and MAJOR JOSE  O TUGAB (QMS) PA assumed command as the new commandant of this unit. CPT ERNESTO D ALBORES (QMS) PA was the Assistant Commandant. When MAJOR MACARIO M BERNASOR JR (INF) PA was assigned with this unit on 16 January 1995,CAPT ALBORES (QMS) PA was relieved as the Assistant Commandant and was as Academic Department Head. MAJOR BERNASOR JR (INF) PA designated as the new Assistant Commandant. CPT EDUARDO T LARGO (INF) PA newly assigned with this unit from 43IB, 8ID, PA and designated as the Head Intelligence, Civil Military Operation, Signal Operation and Training Branch. CPT TOMAS C CONGZON (INF) PA designated as the Tactical Department Head while 1LT DARIO C BUCAWIT (INF) PA designated as Head Admin and Logistics Branch with concurrent position as RSO and AMO. 1LT ARTURO R ORBIO (INF) PA the Head Development Doctrine Department who went on schooling at TRADOC, PA.

Presently the unit composed of a workforce of Thirty Eight (38) Enlisted Personnel were MSg Mario B Yu (Inf) PA as the Sgt Major and TSg Jorge A Dagondon (Inf) PA as the F/Sgt. All  of the personnel are graduate of of career courses and Most of them are graduate of  Specialization Courses and Instructor Development Training. Their specialized field of  military occupational specialty and experiences to include seminars enhance the instructional capability of the unnt.

            The conduct of training for career courses remain at Hqs 8DTU, 8ID, PA at Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar the unit occupied the camouflage building  as the Office/Officers quarter, and the two door building as the classrooms, LOGCOM building  as the students and organic EP barracks.


            Since the activation of the 8DTU on 01 November 1988, the Training conducted and successfully completed prescribed courses for the troops for them to be more equiped and always ready in every tasks given to them.
